We're still trying to decide what to do during the winter months ... there is no electric source --- I've talked with several people who have or had chickens and they said not to worry about the winter weather ... I just worry cuz it gets pretty cold here ... any suggestions for options without electricity

You can use an extension cord until you can get a more permanent solution (I had one that ran from the house to the barn for 6 years before we finally got permanent power out there). Check out the thread on how to make an inexpensive water heater (to keep their water from freezing) and how it can be used for a coop heater as well at https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=107951&p=1. You'll probably want to provide them with a night light as well.
