Our first egg!

22 weeks old and got our first egg this morning. I made sure to go out and thank the girls with extra attention and some blueberries! YAY!

Just realized I did not really introduce myself. I am 42, married (third time is the charm I am told!) and though I have been a journalist, photographer (well, still both, just not committing journalism currently) and a youth worker among other things, when I met my cowboy husband, I did a 180 in life and became a ranch girl. Our first endevour together was heading up an alpaca ranch near Edmonton B.C. where we spent two wonderful years taking care of a 360 head herd. I loved it, especially as I got to do all the baby stuff and medical, but I longed to come home to my beautiful Columbia Valley and my grown sons, so we found a job here managing a ranch with far fewer animals, but in a place most appropriately called heaven! No alpacas, but several horses, dogs, cats, and now chooks, as well as 1000 acres to take care of.
So back to my first eggS! We found six more laid just outside the coop (we free range). Yesterday we culled 25 roos, leaving us 2 with 16 hens, and my hubby thinks that was the trick. Thoughts? Were the girls perhaps too stressed with all those naughty boys chasing after them? Or is it just coincidence?
We put the six extra eggs we found in the nesting boxes in the coop hoping the girls get the idea it is a better place to lay! I guess we will see, but I am sure once the wintery weather hits they will prefer to lay indoors.
Yesterday was my first experience in many years harvesting chooks, and it was not as awful as I thought. We thanked each one for their sacrifice to feed us (I just had to... it is the Metis in me!) and it all went well.
I love this site, and look forward to chatting with all of you and sharing and gaining new ideas.
