It all started when we went strawberry picking and met our first chicken enthusiast. We had no idea how easy it would be to become addicted to chicken-keeping. We didn't want to start with chicks, but rather with 3-5 month old hens. We planned on three hens, but ended up with three hens and a rooster (Carl was just irresistible!) We thought we lost one of the girls, but she was just bullied into the corner, so we went and bought a barred rock that would be established at the top of the pecking order. Carl is pretty passive, so I'm wondering if he is not actually a pullet... Anyone who knows, please feel free to fill me in! I wanted more.. But my partner, Susan, put her foot down at six... So we picked out our last one today. She's a silkie! Silkie was actually the first breed I wanted, but the first supplier we bought from didn't breed silkies. She is the only one that doesn't have a set name yet, so any suggestions would be appreciated

So everyone meet our flock of six!

Dixie-Lee (Dixie for short) She is a barred rock hen. Top of the pecking order until Carl grows some balls and takes control! She should start laying anytime now!

Nacho - by far my very favourite. she is a Mille Fleur bantam hen. She is the sweetest little thing. Not sure her age, but I think she is around 3 months old... She was the one we thought we lost <3 Poor Nacho...

Carl - named after Carl from MadTV (Lorraine's husband) - he's the polish rooster (or hen, someone please tell me) Carl was given a haircut around the eyes after a mud attack XD Please don't mock the bonnet...

How long will it take to grow back?

The one on the far left is McDonalds. We were told she is a hen, but must be some sort of mix, any ideas on what?

McDonalds.jpg

McDonalds is the most timid (is that the right wording? She is hard as hell to catch!)

Wendy.jpg

Wendy - Second in the pecking order. She is the funniest of the flock. I could watch her all day bobbing her tophat

She is a crested polish hen.

Lorraine.jpg

Our newest addition! Hoping it's a hen, the supplier said she was.. Any ideas on names? We were thinking Lorraine, but not sure if it fits her. She is so cute! <3 Love the silkie!
