Outdoor motion detector lights

I was joshing about Buzz. I liked his name and two word, all lowercase comment.

So we have a wired wood barn. Light socket and bulb inside with some outlets. We'd like an exterior motion light, but it's not wired on the exterior. We can go solar, but those fixtures only last so long and end up getting tossed. Battery powered seem to have a longer lifespan, but batteries are disposable goods and that bothers me. The other option is what you use. I'll ask our electrician how much it would cost to wire a proper outlet. Or could we create our own plug-in light we mount in a box we create for shelter and cover with scrap Lexan. I'm not sure if the Lexan would affect motion detection, but it's a thought.

Thanks for the links and the photo!

ETA: What's your experience on the motion detection distance?

@cavemanrich Cave Person, look what I just found:

We installed new front and back porch lights this year, but with standard LED bulbs. There isn't room for an additional socket; it would look too clunky and stick out of the globe.

What do you think about a motion detection light bulb?

As for Mars, I loved Andy Weir's book. I actually went to high school with him and am presently reading Artemis!

I like that motion detection bulb. It is reasonably priced. The 5 watt is equal to 50 . If you think you need more light then you have option for 9 watts witch is equal to about 100 incandescent. All in one unit is a good way to go. I thought you needed a flood lite type of lighting. :idunnoThat is why I suggested the setup I have.
My motion detection distance on my old school setups years ago was fair. I think about 30 feet. I did not want street traffic to set it off. It was all in the angle that it was pointed.
I suggest you ask electrician to install a proper outdoor weatherproof fixture. You may be able to work with him as you do the miscellaneous, and he does the electrical wiring. You will sleep better knowing it is done RIGHT.
You can experiment best placement location, and operation, by using a house lamp without shade. Connect as you are testing with a sufficient extension cord. Obviously take everything down when thru with test. I think bulb needs to be upside down according to the diagrams on Amazon .

As for your Martian Friend... THATS REALLY COOL.

We do need a flood light motion detector for the side of the house, but we can only afford to buy one. We're deep in the woods on a tiny road, with lots of crime in our area, so we'd like motion lights elsewhere, too. Your setup would be ideal for us. I think people are saying the lightbulb isn't rated for outdoor exposure. It would hang upside down, but I don't know if it's a good option. Then again it can't be much different than what we're already using. There's a point where I just need to try these things and stop reading comments.

There's a flying thing in the sky heading for our property. The chickens are totally perplexed, but Henry hasn't sounded the alarm yet. It has an orange sail and what sounds like a lawnmower motor. No, wait. I lie. There are TWO flying things!!

There's just something very Chitty Chitty Bang Bang about motorized parasails. Very nifty, but let's just hope a flying thing with a beak stays clear of them!!

Anyhoo, I'm forcing myself to make a decision and order a motion detector flood light by tonight. The light bulb would be great for the front porch if there's a way to make it stay on when we need it to. I think I'll supersize the fonts and give it another read.

:gig:lau Well you know my fonts are under control.......:yesss: I just copied and pasted Amazons LARGE PRINT DESCRIPTIONS.....:barnie

Sometimes you have to take the bull by the horns and mainline what you need. I'm sure the motion flood lite will serve you WELL.. :thumbsup

But how do they work? Well or crappy? I find lots of their stuff is junk. Like their wood burning tool cracked after 2 uses, pneumatic staple gun crapped out early, driveway motion detector worked less than a week etc.

I always read the online reviews for a product before buying anything at HF. A wealth of knowledge there. I always start with the negative reviews first. Some of their stuff is great and some is crap.
