I'm new to chickens, so take this with a grain of salt. We have an Australian Shepard, she is great for us, who came from stock on a rodeo ranch. She has the genetics to work animals, not eat them. Genetics of the animal can not be changed. We live in the city. We have a urban lot with no fence, she wears a radio collar to keep her from visiting those who do not want her. She has been protective of our "pets" and family. Guinea Pigs, Cockatiels and so far the chicks. She could have eaten several pets, but would rather make sure they are safe in their homes/ cages/kennels. The brooder is on a table with 7 5 week old chicks, no interest unless on gets out and she brings it back. However if she we chained up, she would have gone crazy I think. Instinct is strong, just look at those chicks, so look for a breed that meets your needs.
