My name is Veronica and I am from Jacksonville, NC. Most people know this place as Camp Lejeune, NC. I am married with three boys. We have two cats and three dogs. Now we have a chicken and a rooster.

My husband brought home a rooster and a chicken a couple of weeks ago. I have never raised chickens nor been around them. I have no idea what to do. I have been reading all over the internet for information on rearing chickens and let me tell you there is a lot of information out there. My husband tells me that he is suppose to collect the eggs from the chicken as she is hatching them and then put them back when she is done so that she can then tend to them. I don't see how this will work. I thought that you simply left them in the cage with her and she would take care of them until it was time for them to hatch. Has anyone else heard of this?

I love them. I have named the rooster (Ricky) and the chicken (Lucy), from one of my favorite shows, I love Lucy. I need all the help I can get.

From New Mexico!

You are going to need more than one chicken as one rooster and one hen....he will be too much for her. 3 or 4 hens for one rooster is a good idea.

Not all chickens go "broody", (want to set on eggs). Should one of them want to hatch the eggs, you just let nature take it's course. Do not remove the eggs and if one goes broody, you let them set on them. You can remove them as they are layed by several chickens if you wish, so they don't get broken and place them back under a broody hen.

Good luck in your new chicken adventures!
