Hello all,

I have 8 what seem to be 4 week ducklings, first time duck owner so it’s been quite the learning curve.

This morning go out to the garage to tend to the little ones and it seems that one of my Pekins has lost the ability to walk normal…as if he/she can’t get one foot ahead of the other.

Any insight on this will be much appreciated!!!
Thanks!!

Hi!
What feed are they currently on?
It could be a niacin deficiency, could you share a photo of her, or video even, of her walking? (you would have to upload it to youtube and then copy the link here, photos can be attached to the post, though).

If she appears pigeon toed (toes pointing inward) she might be niacin deficient- to remedy, you can give her 1ml of "Durvet cattle injectable B complex" over a treat (we dont inject it, we give it orally) - this is available at TSC.

If you arent in the US and can't find the B complex, you could also try niacin flush effect pills (not flush free, it must be flush). Simply take a 100mg capsule and break it open, tip the powder into 1 gallon of water and use that for their drinking water. It will give a big niacin boost.

Thanks beloved,
I’m unable to load the video at the moment because I’m on my way to work and won’t be home until this afternoon.

I thought I was giving enough niacin, regular feed is purina duck feed, then they all get daily doses of peas and impeckables, which I was told was high in niacin.

Any insight on the impeckables duck treats? I can’t seem to find anymore anywhere.

Thanks so much for the reply, I’ll look into the b complex. I always wanted ducks and I’m finally at a point where I can raise some

I haven't heard of them sorry!
It could be something else, but commonly walking issues are related to niacin- some breeds end up needing more niacin than others, pekins for example need quite a lot. But a video or photo (if possible, whenever you are able!) would help to rule out anything else, if the problem came on overnight, it could be some kind of injury.

It's awesome that you finally get to have some! Ducks are a lot of fun!!

Perkins require more naicin than any other ducks. Purina duck feed contains the minimum amount of naicin a duck needs, but Pekin need more than the minimum amount.

If it is a niacin deficiency, it best to give vitamin b complex, which contains much higher levels. I would do this because it won't hurt your duck. You can get the vitamin b complex at TSC. It says injectable, but you just give it orally. A lot of people like to put it on top of a tasty treat.

Here is a picture of what I get.

Is there a certain dosage I should give? I.e. 1/day, 2/day, and is the improvement noticeable quickly?

They are a lot of fun but they are 8 more little beings to care for. They are growing quickly too. I want to be sure I’m doing right by then so I change their water often and bedding daily. Once they’re full grown they’re gonna have the run of a whole building that I’m pretty excited about

Sorry I forgot to put the amount. 1 ml a day is the usual recommended amount.

I would also read through the link @Miss Lydia shared. It has a lot of good information about naicin deficiency.

It is always possible that naicin deficiency is not the problem, but it is the most common one for Pekin.
