I believe adding any supplement to their feed is inviting the chickens to bill out their feed on the ground in search of the oyster shell, scratch, what-have-you. Just MHO.

I also like to feed it separately so I can sort of keep an eye on their consumption.

In a tuna can so I can tell when they need more. It is by the waterer and I see the ones who are laying or about to lay helping themselves but not the younger ones.
