Hi All,

Are oyster shells considered grit? I know they are used for calcium but wondering if they have a dual purpose? Also, my chickens are free ranged all day and am wondering if i still need a source for grit? I am feeding them whole sprouted grains and seeds, though, so want to make sure.

thanks!

Since your birds free range, they probably find their own grit. But back in the day when my grandparents had chickens, they used oyster shells for grit without any problems.

Oyster shell dissolves and doesn't stay in the crop long enough to be very effective. As long as you free range, don't worry about the grit. They are finding enough on their own without you having to provide it.
