We live near the coast and there is a place to recycle shells. Could these be used to feed back to the chickens? What would need to be done to prepare the shells?

While I have never done this, I've read once before that you can rinse them off well, dry them well, and break into manageable pieces that the flock can handle.

I've not done this either, just have commercially available shells. But I'd think that if you got some, smashed it to small size, washed and baked, they should be good to go!

I buy mine, but have a friend who drops his shells in a feed bag and smashes them up with a hammer.Seems to work for him. Will

I have a very tall metal container. I put the oyster shells in it and smash up the shells with a sledge hammer. The pieces come out all sizes but I try to keep even the bigger pieces small enough for my girls. They pick out what they want.
