I got my chicks from Mcmurray Hatchery and it is a strait run. Some of them have either paint or sharper mark on their heads. I guessing that's marking their sex, but does it mean they are male or female?

Did you order more than one breed? I know with some hatcheries, they'll mark chicks by breed if you ask them to.

I got cornish crosses and black stars, and its the cornish that some are marked and others not.

in my experience a lot of hatcheries will mark the roosters if you only order a few (cackle does this),... occasionally a breed will be marked (usually only if you request it)

Sounds to me like they marked the roos .. filled other orders that asked specifically for pullets.. and then mixed the roos back in for straight run orders
