I'm thinking of ordering orpington and/or maran hatching eggs from Papa's Poultry. It looks like the owners made it a project to breed all different kinds color crosses. I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with this hatchery, and with orpington's and maran's from this hatchery in particular.

I'm hoping for birds that are hardy and still retain some heritage breed instincts like broodiness. It seems like many hatcheries seem to breed birds for feather and egg color -- which is great -- but that is secondary to me to soundness of character.

Thanks!

i have bought several times...eggs not chicks. i have purchased in winer months so obviously not the best time. i had a pretty good hatch and what did hatch was VERY good quality. my friend go pullets from them and very happy. i will buy from them again for sure

Thanks everyone who responded. I wanted to give an update:

I ordered 8 assorted orpington eggs and 4 lavender maran eggs. I received 10 orp. and 5 maran eggs. Packaging was great. Hatching results were mixed.

Of the 10 orpington eggs, some arrived with large air cells (made me thing old eggs) 2 made it to lockdown and only 1 hatched. 6 of them were either clears or very early blood rings. Don't know if the stock was poor or shipping hit these eggs particularly hard, but results were disappointing.

The maran eggs did much better. One quit around day 10ish, but the remaining 4 all made it to lock down and hatched, including the "extra" maran egg, which looks to be a BCM.

(This is the 4th time I've used this incubator -- previous times were with eggs from backyard flock and I've had 90% + hatches).

The chicks themselves are gorgeous. I'll try to remember to update again when they adults.
