My friend has just hatched a baby quail. It would not hatch completely on it's own and she stepped in and helped it hatch. She could hear it peeping and she had to dig it out of the shell. The baby cannot walk or stand. It's wings will flap, but crawls around on his belly. It will drink and eat when she puts it near the dish and puts its beak in the feeders. What should she do? Should she put it down or does anyone have any good suggestions?

Thanks for reading

That's very sad to hear. I'm not sure what she should do, but it doesn't seem like these symptoms would go away soon. Any eggs you help out have a chance of not making it. In fact, we just had a peachick that we helped out of its egg die a few days ago. The birds that don't make it out, you should never expect will be 100%. It's tampering with nature.

It's not recommended to help a chick out of the shell. They usually do not make it. It is usually a humidity issue if a chick doesn't get out of the shell all the way OR it was too weak to begin with. Poor little guy. I wouldn't let it suffer like that.

The way I do it is wrap it in a paper towel and snip off it's head with scissors. Quick, and seems like the most humane way compared to other ways suggested.

. I actually have not culled any of my birds (ever).
