Hello everyone!

Yesterday, I picked up my sweet (albeit dumb) chicken. She occasionally squats so I can pick her up and carry her around like the princess she thinks she is. When she does this, I’m a good chicken mom and check her butt.

To my surprise, I found what looked like a fresh prolapse. It wasn’t discolored or pecked at, though I had noticed a couple of ruffled tail feathers earlier this week. I immediately separated her because I know this can be an emergency.

Gloves on, I did some frantic Googling and gathered sugar, hydrocream, and Vetericyn. But when I went to treat her… the prolapse was gone. Her butt looked totally normal. She stayed in isolation overnight, and this morning- still normal.

She is not enjoying the crate. She tried repeatedly to jump through the upper bars and break her own neck, actually knocked herself silly for a second. We added a blanket and a cardboard box to stop her from offing herself.

My questions:
  • Does this happen often?
  • How long should I keep her separated before letting her back with the flock?
Details: She’s an 11-month Oliver Egger (best guess: Legbar crossed with that rooster from Moana). She’s been laying and pooping normally. We just finished a round of Corid. Supplements are in her water, everyone has oyster shell, and we’re transitioning back to layer feed after a long molt from the big hens and ducks. No rooster.

Hi,

They sort of train their prolapse to stay in. It might be swelling up for some reason. You said you're transitioning back to layer feed. What were they on before?

I'd try probiotics as there might be something awry in her digestive tract.

Grower feed for extra protein to support molt- Poached was one of the chickens that didn’t molt. I will certainly try probiotics! I just got home and checked on her again and she’s still lookin good
