Hi, Jeff here from Southern Tier NY, Does anyone have any experience with partridge wyandottes from Ideal Poultry, or any other hatchery for that matter? Mostly interested in general color and penciling. Thanks.

I ordered 4 LF pullets in 2018 from Ideal after learning that a Minnesota hatchery was no longer selling them.

3 are deep red/mahogany and 2 of them have better markings than the 3rd, and these also have least brassy necks, which I don't think is much at all. They have nice black tail feathers. The 4th has a much lighter background color, but not like the UK etc. ones. The 4th one also has like a broken pattern going on.

They are all smaller than SQ and they won't stand still long enough for me to scrutinize their body style against my 7-yo SQ PW. But they are certainly not robust as her. I acquired a nice rmature roo in 2017 to put with my old hen, but none of the few eggs she laid in 2018 were fertile and the Ideal girls had not started laying. He and a 2017 Speckled Sussex hen died mysteriously a few days apart not long after I think the Ideal PWs started laying (they had been sharing a multi-breed pad with him and a blue Ameraucana roo).

I've ordered more of the PW pullets from Ideal for 2019 because of most having great coloring and sharp lines. I'm still looking for SQ PWs that someone will part with.

Hello there,
Thanks for the thorough and comprehensive input. I gather the ones you got from Ideal did not produce the show quality patterns you were looking for. I am new to this, certainly not as experienced as you. Would you say their colors and feather patterns may improve after one round of molting? In any event I was curious to see if I can get something like the ones in a video I saw on Youtube from a breeder in England. I thought the double lacing on those birds was interesting.

The difference in colors and patterns between different lines of PW is pretty wide. The roos in some of the pictures have kind of blunt tail. I wonder how your late roo looked like.

If you have the time at some point, it would be good if you could post some pictures of your 7 year old and 2018 PWs. Thanks again for the info. It was very useful.
