OK< this is PURELY anecdotal, I've only got a few hatchings worth of data. (3) But I've had no pasty butt since feeding my hatchlings wet mash with a thin oatmeal like consistency.

That said, as with every case, correlation != causation

of course, that also corresponds with my shift from buying chicks most of an hour away at the farm store to incubating myself - it could as easily be a lack of shipping stress, or some other variable I've failed to identify.

And I've used just warm water and a gently rag - any lost feathers quickly regrow, but be gentle!

In my experience, some chicks are more prone to pasty butt even in same conditions. Currently, we have SS, BR, and EE chicks. All SS have had pasty butt. Only one EE has had it. Another time, most of the Dark Brown Leghorn chicks had pasty butt, yet rest of the other several breeds did not in that batch. And pasty butt goes away after 7 days or less, in my experience.

water will help, so make sure all are drinking. Heat can matter if they stay too hot too long, it seems. A heat lamp should not be creating any issues for you if they are able to get away from the heat at will.

we use running warm/hot water to gently work the poop loose. They get patted dry (only their rear is wet), and put back under the heat to finish drying off. I’ve never used oil or ointment, so I can’t speak to that.

This problem usually goes away on its own after a few days. I usually just keep a watch on them and occasionally clean up the vent with wet tissue. I usually find it is not much of a problem just an inconvenience.
