So I hatched a frizzle bantam, and it’s a few days old now. I noticed yesterday that it wasn’t moving around a bunch and acted sick like. So I checked and sure enough he had pasty butt. I cleaned it up and putt it back in the brooder. Its abdomen or whole back end itself seemed abnormally large and swollen. I checked today and it’s not moving anymore and had more pasty butt. I cleaned it again but from past experience it seems like it won’t make it. And another thing, it’s feces smells very odd. It’s kind of a sweet stinky smell. Very odd and I’ve never had that happened before with pasty butt. Do you know of anything I can do??

Have you cleaned off the stuck poop with soapy warm water and tissue? You can apply a dab of olive oil or vaseline to the vent opeing. Can you dip the chick’s beak in some electrolyte water or sugar water, and get it drinking? Do you have Poultry NutriDrench or a similar vitamin electrolyte drop? Give it 2-3 drops orally. Mix some chick crumble with water and offer it and some egg yolk. Add a few drops of olive oil. It may be too late for the chick, but I would try to revive it.

I`m sorry but I have not had any luck with survival if pasty butt goes too long. It`s heartbreaking. That is how we got started with chickens. Grandkids had 3 Jersey Giants for FFA one got sick with pasty butt and did not make it. They were so broken hearted we ended up with them! The rest is history!

It sure can`t hurt to try!
