We noticed my 6 month old copper maran hen had hardened poop which I suspect is pasty butt. We soaked her and cleaned her up-she seems ok. My question is what typically causes this? No change in feed. We did have the remnants of Hurricane Ian hit here in Coastal NC 2 days ago so maybe it's stress related? I am hoping for ideas to prevent this from happening again. Not sure if these things are a fluke or something I can help. We do acv in their water. No other hens seem to be having a problem

Sometimes chickens are lazy poopers or they have a lot of fluff that poop will stick to.

Solution is to clean as needed or to trim some of the fluff so the poop isn't as prone to stick.

If you have any photos you wish to share that would be great too.

I have an EE that routinely gets “pasty butt” (she’s just got a fluffy butt) and we routinely check her and trim it off. She’s over 8 yrs old and our system seems to work just fine. Just keep your eye on your Marans to make sure this gets cleaned up right away if it becomes a habit.
