My 6 year old hen Investigator has been really susceptible to pasty butt all her life. I have given her showers when I can, but she does not cooperate and it's a lot of work. I'm wondering how I can prevent her from getting pasty butt again and if there are easier ways to clean her off. She takes dirt baths but doesn't preen herself well.

I'll attach some better pics tomorrow

We have one that's always had that too. We've tried probiotics, and even ferment grain which has a lot of those in it but she'll still get it.

It's easiest with two people if one can hold the bird, butt out, and the other uses a kitchen scissors and cuts entirely around the anus. If there's some close to the skin, then we get a dishpan of slightly soapy water and soak her in that for a few minutes, then finish getting the rest off her.

The best way to prevent it is to just get in the habit of cutting her butt end whether she needs it or not. We finally learned to do that.

She's the only one of 20, and it's been going on for years, so who knows why. It's just how she is I guess.

Thanks for the advice! Sorry for not replying sooner, for some reason I wrote a reply before but it didn't send so... anyway, thanks! After her next bath I will trim her feathers. BTW she does have access to dirt baths but does not take them properly - she just fluffs herself up and lays down in it 😂
