Pasty butt?

We lost two chicks to pasty butt today. How can I prevent pasty but in chicks? They have fresh water all the time and always have medicated chick starter in their feeder. What steps can I take? Thanks for your time

Sometimes when I mail order chicks some will have pasty butts I like to use a warm wet paper towel to wipe off the poop.

You need to check their butts and clean off the poop. If it closes the vent, the chicks can't poop and will die. Medicated food is just to prevent cocci.
