Maddy looked just fine when I checked on the flock this morning.
But later in the afternoon, I went to feed 'em some leftovers...
And Maddy, my barred rock hen, had a big patch of missing feathers on her back by the base of her tail.

That looks like it hurts. D=
Should I separate her from her flock to prevent pecking? And maybe keep her somewhere warm, so her bare rump doesn't get frost bitten?

Nope, she was hatched and raised with her flock.
And there's no roo.
But she's the only black hen in the flock, could it be racism?

The only other thing I can think of would be mites, but from the photo it doesn't look like mites. I would say she is low hen on the pecking order. You should try one of those chicken aprons. They work wonders. I had an EE that was getting picked on and put one of those on her. She healed up with no problems at all.

Actually, I have noticed missing feathers on this particular hen before... now that I think about it.

A small patch on her head, and a few here and there around her neck. I didn't think a lot about it though...

Where can I get this apron?

You have a feather picker in your flock and she is really picking on this poor girl. Have you noticed the feathers on the coop floor or could one of the hens be eating them? If they are eating them then you have a protein deficiency problem. Get more protein in their diets.

Cover her bald spot with blue kote or pine tar. Go to the feed store and ask for an anti picking ointment.

I went looking and there are some listed under the other items for sale thread and they are called "Chicken Saddles". I have the type without the wing coverings.

I know this isn't really what you asked about, so sorry for straying off-topic, but I don't think that's a Barred Rock.
