2 peas hatched today -- had to work w/ one -- 'hatched' a few minutes too early -- had a lot of trouble getting the bleeding to stop --- 15 minutes of quick-stop and applying gentle but firm pressure proved useless -- rinsed the area with bottled water to re-examine the source -- i thought the blood was just leaking out --the two (maybe one) veins(?) were barely hanging of the bellybutton -- i squeezed them tight with quickstop for 5 min and the bleeding finally stopped -- i honestly thought he was dead and his heart just stopped pumping blood -- i was wrong

--- let him dry for an hour or so, then i rinsed him, papertowel dried him and put him back in the bator to dry off again... he's in the brooder now with another peachick ...

his legs are so pale in comparison -- i'm sure he's dehydrated from the blood loss --i can get him to drink and i think he may just make it ... just wondering if there's anything i can ADD to the water to help build up his blood supply again?? any input or suggestions are appreciated...

John as long as he is still breathing he should be fine. I think he will not drink til tomorrow anyways because they usually don't til the yok sac is aborbed. But again just let it be and keep an eye on it. Like I said it should be fine because there really isn't much to do. You can get poultry chick vitamins and mix into the water but they won't drink for about 24-48 hours depending on the chick.
I had a chick that pipped and it took another day and a half to actually hatch. When they pip let them be for at least a day or two. If you take the egg and put it to your ear you should hear the ocean LMAO! No you should hear light tapping or a scratching sound. As long as you hear that the bird ir fine and alive. If it doesn't hatch in 2 days I will try to peal off a small piece of egg shell. Then try to get a membrane but if I see blood I stop and dab with papertowel and place the egg back in hatcher/incubator for another day. If it doesn't hatch by then I will try again. Always have some warm water to dip your finger in to moisten the membrane.

thanks! have the vitamin/electrolytes on hand ... i don't like to use addiditives, but i do like to have them on hand after some silkie issues this spring .... his feet seem just as pale as last night when compared to his brooder mate (he's a bronze, and the other's an opal bs) .. haven't 'caught' them drinking yet ... he doesn't mind when i hold him to drink and lets me know when he's had enough ... i don't normally do this, but with the threat of dehydration due the blood loss this guy had, well.. i'd feel even more guilty if i didn't try.... on the plus side, he's just as perky and aware as the other guy

i know everybody says, "don't intervene" --- i've done that -- and the results suck for me when i don't.... going with my gut on each individual egg --- not always right, but i'm hatching a lot more by intervening (this is on shipped eggs, not my own) ... we've all seen the distorted air cells that come along with shipped eggs --- i'm plumping up the embryos by running higher humidities -- i know it makes it tougher for an overfull chick to hatch, but it gives me something to work with -- i can't do much with a shrinkwrapped embryo and a distorted air cell

i know all incubators are different .. i've kinda learned how to work with mine for pea eggs ... what worked for me and pea eggs in feb and march (my own) needed an adjustment of 2/10 of a degree for may/june (shipped eggs) ... lost a few too many a few weeks ago --- even tho it's a preset computerized temp, i can't rely solely on what the bator's '"supposed to doing"...

hope that didn't come off as pissy -- didn't mean it to (it's just the way i write)

and i wanted you to know where i was coming from

may be a bit late to do much good but would suggest you to dab that belly button with some iodine or strong betadine for the next few days. A little bit of blood loss is a lot to them, hope it does allright.

thanks! ..i've dealt with a little blood loss and know exactly what you mean.... this was a LOT of blood loss and i'm really amazed he's surviving ...he's holding his own and suprisingly his bellybutton healed and dried beautifully

(probobly due to the fact he had no blood left to complicate things....
