Does anyone have an idea what to use or do for a peacock chick that has air in its body? I have to use a catheter to release the air from its body. I don't know what to do otherwise. I'm pretty sure that it is some kind of bacterial infection, but do not know what is causing it and can not find anything on the net. Please help. I don't want to loose the chick.

Thanks,

It sounds like subcutaneous emphysema or wind puff, a leak in an air sac which can be due to an injury or sometimes an infection. The air under the skin can be removed by inserting an 18 gauge needle, and squeezing the air out or removing it with a syringe. It may have to be repeated for several times until it seals off. If it ferom an infection, antibiotics may be required. Here is some info: http://ijasvm.com/ijasvmadmin/upload/IJASVM_5113cbc51d31b.pdf

Thank you so much. I will keep doing what I'm doing and hopefully it will seal itself. I was wondering if it was similar to what people get and now I know. Where can I get tetracycline? Or is there something else that I can get that work as well?

You can get tetracycline at most feed stores--Duramycin10 is one brand. Gallimycin is a brand of erythromycin for use in the water, and Tylan 50 is an injectable antibiotic--both are good for many bacterial infections.

Update on my baby peachick. She or he is doing awesome. The night I posted my first help, I deflated her belly. Held her for about 1/2 hours and apparently the hole that was sucking in the air sealed. I have not had to deflate her since. She is doing great and singing like a Lark or Nightengale, whichever you like. LOL And a big thanks to Eggcessive for the info on the antibiotic.

Thanks everyone.

I love this place sooo much. Every time I have an issue with my birds I usually google it and I always end up here finding an answer. My issue last night was no different! I had a chick with same issue. Its whole body was inflated to the point I thought its skin would pop. I did as advised here and it went well! I checked on chick this morning before leaving for work and it was doing just fine with no re-inflation.
