actually, of the 7 species only the grey is somewhat common, others like the malaysian, borneo are virtually nonexsistant, others like the palawan and rothchild's are available, but very very hard to come by.
The germaines would be the second easiest to find.
But yes, one reason for all this is they only lay a few eggs at the time. The malaysian only lay 1-2 a year, usually and that's it for them, that's why if you find them , they are in the $1500 range. None are really cheap though, most are over $500 pr. except the greys.
Yes, they are one of the few tropical pheasant species too, and do need winter protection, especially in northern climates, otherwise, one good hard freeze, and they're gone.
Heavily planted aviaries are pretty much a must for them if you want any form of success breeding them. Plenty of structure in there helps too, logs, little ground shelters, anything for them to hind in and feel comfortable. For the most part, keep them as pairs only. Large pens, 200 sqft or bigger, lots of fruits and vegtables go a long way in them too, and of course a good game bird diet.
They are one of the more demanding species to keep, that's another reason why many dont have them, and those that do, have to charge for them.
They are beautiful though, the palawans and rothchilds especially.
