Oops, I meant to respond to this a couple days ago...We do enjoy having him around (except for the prodigious amount of large poops on the deck) and are happy to feed him. So far, he mainly gets kitten chow with mealworms and Torta bread from Costco as treats. He occasionally likes various fruits and oatmeal but nothing else consistently, a. He refused to eat the bird chow that was recommended. The wild birds at the bird feeder did not like it either.
Hi again, @marybdvm , not sure what bird chow was recommended to you, but you might try a game bird crumble or pellet. If you are supplementing with catfood to bump up the protein, you can also see if he likes one of the commercial chicken feeds. Sometimes they prefer crumbles as opposed to pelleted feed, or vice versa, it just depends on the birds and what they are accustomed to recognizing as food. I dunno if a straight kitten chow diet will have too high a protein or too much ash content, but I can tell you that my birds would eat straight catfood every day if they could figure out how to get to the bag

I give my birds commercial grit even though they are outside and can theoretically find their own grit, because I supplement with scratch grains to keep them busy, and I want to be sure the coarse grains don't get clogged up in the digestive tract. Cracked corn is a nice supplement in the winter for energy... I also give my birds leftover vegetables, carrot peelings (a favorite!), and fresh chard and cherry tomatoes from the garden (well, until it froze solid a couple days ago

I think MinxFox gives her peas spaghetti, and my neighbor tells me he's been giving his Chinese food (home cooked, of course!)... In nature, the birds eat all sorts of things, so are fairly omniverous.
