I'm just wondering how many of you feel like your peas are great guard birds. Our male pea puffed up and gave an owl a bit of an attitude at age 1 but that was about it. Now he's 2 and whoo boy if he isn't feeling like a man. He sits on top of the barn, which is actually the tallest spot on our property. He squacks and talks and struts about like he's something real special. We went up on the roof of the house to fix something and he flew over to check it all out. He's giving our dogs some attitude now. I feel like he's probably quite proficient at protecting the property. I've noticed that the peahens wander about eating things and if they go out of sight he starts calling them. He just sits on the roof though. He's like an ornament that's loud.

I've heard of Pea fowl as protectors, though I have never had any. and I've heard of turkeys as protectors ( boy they give you a fright when its dark and they sneak up on you....) But it sounds like you have a good protector there, and he should do fine as long as he doesn't attack you. they do make good ornaments don't they ... :)

I keep mine penned so don't have any stories that I can think of, but a lady I have bought peafowl from has told me that her peacocks saw a hawk attack a chicken and they all ganged up on the hawk and made it get off of the chicken. Also she said a pit bull visited her house and the peacocks chased it off all the way down the street flying after it. To me it sounded like they are at their strongest and boldest in a group AKA bevy, but I have read of stories where a peacock watches over the chickens and will wait until all of them go into the barn at night before he enters. I would say they can definitely be protective.

My pair are penned as well, but Pete does a fantastic job of letting me know if anyone pulls in my driveway, the neighbors driveway, or the other neighbors driveway!! He's so funny!!

He does seem to be a good one. Watchful but he's never attacked my kids. We were busy working last night and he was literally on the roof above us watching. So darn amusing. He did get some string wrapped around one of his feet somehow and I had to catch him. He was not appreciative of the net but he never bit me so I'd say he's pretty awesome so far.

My peas protect my flocks from killer turtles
