OK.
I've read in recent times that an aviary size of 80 sq. ft. is OK (or minimum) for Peafowl.
Whenever I read that I think : do people really know how small that is ?
I took a picture of me laying in an area I had Quail. From 2x4 center to 2x4 center, it measures 6' x 12' = 72 sq. ft.
The reason I lay in it was to give size perspective. An adult male is longer than me, even with my arms stretched out.
Here is a picture of a three year old male. From the corner in front of him to the up-right by his tail, is 6'.
(this temp. aviary they are in is 720 sq. ft. total)
So what do you think would be a better minimum ?
How about you go outside and mark out an area 8' wide and 10' long. 80 sq. ft.
Lay in this area and ask yourself : is this large enough for a bird a meter/yard (or more) longer than me, to live it's life in ?
In the book Pheasants of the World, by Keith Howman, it states a minimum of 400 sq. ft.
Now since you are in your yard marking out the other size....mark out one 20' x 20', 400 sq. ft. Lay in it as well, and see what you think.
Don't just guess, try what I have said above and then tell me, in all good conscience, would you keep Peafowl in such a small area ?
