I bought a mature Spaulding Peahen over the weekend and brought her home Monday. We took her out of the cage and gave her Safeguard and treated her for lice with Ivermec pour on, banded her and let her go in isolation.

She immediately started limping as soon as we let her go. She has flown up onto the roost and has not come down. I can easily see that the lower leg is bowed and flexes a bit when she puts weight on the leg. When we went to the vet on Monday to retrieve our parrots from being boarded for the time we went on the trip I did get a syringe of Dramamine for the pain that we haven't used yet.

I am wondering if I should try to splint the leg or just put her in a large parrot cage for a week or two. There is very little swelling if any. Thanks in advance.

If it is truly broken/fractured at all, I would think splinting it would be best..

Oh it was broken all right, not good. We had the vet put a cast on her, she will be fine in a couple of weeks. Thank

you and all the other people that showed concern...

Glad you got that sorted... did the vet come to your place with the portable x-ray?
There was no need for an x-ray, the bone wiggled freely and was quite obviously broken. The charge wasn't bad for the cast, $65 for both the vet and assistant who spent a full hour on the bird. I do question the vet, not Jessica, who wants the cast to stay on a month. I am pretty sure that two weeks would be long enough?
