Rest in peace Eda ~ 2018-2024
Hello, I've been doing a lot of research recently and since I've been selling off a lot of my extra chickens from my large free range flock I have a want to expand. I have 5 guineas, 5 hens, and 1 rooster. They free range daily and have access to a large meadow surrounded by fairly open forest (each tree is 3-4 meters away from each other at most). Since I'm in Europe I don't have to worry about predators like the ones in the states and my chickens and guineas hang out and free range together in a more or less peacefully. Their coop has plenty of room for more birds and although I don't have interest in having male peacocks, I am interested in the possibility of adding a few peahens to the flock. I know there's the risk of disease but I've been very good at flock management and keeping a clean healthy environment and I work my birds often enough to keep them parasite free. However, I'm worried peahens wouldn't feel any attachment to my other birds and might leave in search of a peacock. Is this the case? I know a lot of people that keep peafowl, chickens, turkeys, and guineas in perfect harmony free ranging together. However they always have peacocks with their peahens. Any recommendations and opinions are appreciated! I know this can be a bit of a... Shall we say... Heated topic at times, so if you think my idea is terrible it's fine, just throwing concept ideas
