UGH. We've hit another run of bad luck and found out that one of our Pearl Guineas is a roo. These keets (about 3-4 months old) were brought in as day old babies and placed with our Wyandotte chicks. While they definitely aren't chickens, these guys are really friendly and follow the my chickens routine.
Kuku (Swahili for Chicken) and Kelele (Swahili for Noisey - he's a chatterbox) roost with my hens, eat with my hens and follow my hens around every day. They aren't aggressive or dominant. If it wasn't for their Guinea call, you wouldn't know they were any different from the other birds in the yard. My kids do handle them, but they aren't as comfortable or as calm as the hens being held, however, they are used to regular wing trims and don't squirm too much.
The great news: if you live in an area with a lot of bugs or snakes, you won't have either in your yard if you have a Guinea. The other good news: While I haven't eaten Guinea, I have hear that they are delicious and are the #2 bird world wide, bred for consumption (the turkey came in #3). If you have a place for 2 Pearl Guinea and are close to Greeley, Evans, FOCO, Loveland or Windsor Colorado - please let me know.
