Pecked chick

I had 1 chick hatch out today by my pair of silkies, they were all fine and chick was hidden under mum , later when we looked we find the hen and cockerel had been pecking all over one side of chicks head so took him out straight away, is it normal for mum and dad to behave in this way?

Do you always have to separate the cockerel from chicks?

I"ve had chicks escape from the broody pen and get into the adult pen and the only bird that ignored them was my rooster. The adult hens would chase the chick the the roo just ignored them.
