Well, I did introduce myself a couple of weeks ago, and I learned about Chicken Math, and I reinforced a coop, bought two pullets, and two plus one plus two chicks (minus one to the dachshund) Hit the lumber yard for new coop material because I'm going to build a chicken mansion...hmmmmm...then bought an incubator, hatching eggs and just candled my first 24 eggs (at 8 days) and with the help of my sons (14 and 17) culled a quitter, and three yolkers. All the wile taking a crash course in being a chicken momma, patiently sitting in the bird poop in the morning until my six week old Barred Rock and Buff Orpington decide their feet are sufficiently warmed and want to jump off my shoulders to have breakfast. So; Onto the question:

Mareks

Both my pullets were vaccinated on the word of the breeder. I say breeder because he has a very nice, clean large facility and he told me so. Sometimes you just trust people...of course he has answered all my questions with not so much as an eye roll even though I bought and paid a whole $24 for the advice (including the chickens)

The sweet person I got my chicks from paid the dollar extra per chick for all the vaccines from My Pet Chicken...

NOW I am hatching 24 (- 4 culled tonight - half the remainder realistically = 10 half of which will be roosters so = 5 hens..only hens are chickens, right?) and I am faced with Vaccinating against Mareks or not.

Here's how I feel: I think if I take an animal into my life, home whatever you want to call it, that I am responsible for it's dependency on me. I will feed it, care for it if it is sick and do all the totally responsible (even if gross or heartbreaking) things to make it's life good. I love, but I don't spoil.

I saw 20 little chicks wiggling in their eggs tonight...just a beautiful sight! I can't find Mareks for less than 1000 chicks. Is this true? I had my son call the feed store, and they said you can get it in 12 vials that treat 100 chicks each but he didn't have it, and he didn't know where to get it. Google is leaving me stranded. I am fully prepared to buy the thousand chick dose for my ....20-or 5 chicks but If there is any other way, please advise me?

I would be most happy to deliver extra doses to someone in my area who needed them the same time as me!!

Anyway, thoughts?

Once reconstituted the vaccine is only good for an hour. On the plus side, Jeffers livestock (online pet supply) has it for $20 (plus shipping) for the 1000 dose vial.
