Having trouble posting to new member intro thread. Hope this time works. Homesteaded in VT in the 80s. How did I end up in KS?
Decided, after many years, I have no good reason NOT to raise chickens and have a veggie garden, in the present economic climate. Got 20 chicks a couple of weeks ago: Buffs and Production Reds. Should be overwhelmed with eggs by summer's end. I hate gardening and wish I could train my fat barn kitties to garden. Have been a life-long horse woman (50+ years;
I'm an old hippie
) raised sheep, hogs, turkey (ugh), rabbits, meat chickens. Had culled Buff hens from a local hatchery, as layers and loved them, so they were my first breed of choice, although the blue-laced Wyandottes and Jubilee Orpingtons are mighty pretty. Have looked in on BackyardChickens for years. I love horses and taught Horse 4-H and horsemanship camps for years, as well as did retraining and worked on a Polo ranch, but am mostly a zookeeper in my semi-retirement, and birds are about my favorite animal of all.
