I've been lurking and reading the Broody Hen Hatch A Long thread for a few weeks now. My 9 month old buff orpington was sitting on 5 eggs, ended up with only one. About day 18-19 my buff stopped being broody, she was broody for about 10 days before we put the eggs under her so it had been awhile. One of my black australorps took over sitting on the eggs (now egg). This morning, day 21, the remaining egg had pipped and we could hear a little cheeping. Now it's been about 5 hours later and the BA is off the nest and out of the coop, doesn't want to go back in. The pipped hole is quite a bit bigger and the little chick is peeping like crazy, the egg doesn't feel warm to the touch anymore.

Bottom line: My hen is off her remaining egg while it is hatching, and doesn't seem to want to go back on. I don't have an incubator. Is there anything I can do at this point? I can separate the BA (mom #2 that took over a few days ago) and the chick into a separate enclosure, but I'm not sure if that will help. To make matters worse, we will be gone all day and night tomorrow.
