Hello everyone
I have a 4 month old pekin female (kept with a male and another female) who had a niacin defincency as a duckling, which she 90% recovered from with me adding niacin to her diet.
recently she had an accident and sprained her hip. She is on anti-inflams. It’s now 7 days since she hurt herself, and she is now unable to get up and walk (she was able to limp about you to 2 days ago). I am keeping her in a pen, and moving her to the pool to bath etc. She gets very stressed when the other 2 ducks wander off. So I don’t think I can isolate her completely.
my main concern is isolating her without her getting stressed but also if her quality of life is affected and if she is in any pain. She isn’t eating as much although will still eat mealworms that they get as a treat. Should i try and continue and giver her time or should I get a vet to come out to put her to sleep. I hate to think of her stressed and in pain 😔

Has the vet examined her? wondering since you said she is on anti-flams. Injuries take time to heal so keeping her in a pen is a good thing and giving her water therapy is also good. If the drake is still mating her I'd not let that happen since that may be what is keeping her from progress. Can she see her flock mates that is important? Rest water therapy and inflammatories and time are about all you can do.

Yes, by process of elimination she worked it it’s her hip. Doesn’t think it was dislocated broken as she is still using it to scratch her face etc. I think what’s happened is because she’s been over compensating on the other leg, that’s got a little bit sore too. The hock is warm and the ankle is ever so slightly swollen (on the good leg)
The drake isn’t mating them yet .. got all that to come! But they are very protective of each other. If I remove her the others get stressed and vice versa They are a tight unit! So I am fencing her off in the pen with them which is still stressing her a bit .., also putting manganese in the water which I read is good for bone strength/cartidge and Im still putting niacin in the water. I will give her my best shot but it would break my heart to see her declining/not having quality of life . Will see how she goes over next few days

Agree with @Miss Lydia.

If she is not eating much you may want to keep any eye on her weight. When my ducks have serious leg injuries, I tend to need to tube feed. This helps them get through the stress if the injury. I would get the supplies to have on hand just in case. Hopefully you won't need to, but the supplies can be a challenge to get sometimes.

I have also made a small outdoor pen or used a dog cage for them and bring them in at night. This will help reduce their movent and allow the duck to be outside.
