Hello all!! I had several Pekin ducks, and now I only have a lonely male Pekin drake due to lovely coyotes. I've spent all weekend fixing up the fencing for added protection. My Gordo is obviously sad and I need advice. He roams the day with 8 chickens and they get along fairly well. I understand ducks are super social so my heart is hurting for him. My question since he is with chickens is it better to try and get him hens, other drakes and do yall recommend staying with same breed or is mixing acceptable. Thank you so much for yalls advice. Oh poor Gordo :(

Hens- get him some Pekin girls. As many as you can reasonably feed and manage. I have one Pekin Drake, and three adult hens - he jumps them so much their necks are raw, and sometimes injured. He's been aggressive with my chickens too - not sexually aggressive, though I've heard that happens - but definitely throwing his weight around. The three ducks I hatched a few months back were all males (luck of the dice?) so two have become sausage/seasoned duck and duck breast for tomorrow's dinner. I have 6 more ducks from a hatching not two months back I've now integrated into the adult flock - most are hens, all of the girls are staying, I'll make a decision on which drake to keep once I can more fairly evaluate my choices.

I mix my chickens, but for breeding purposes, I keep my ducks pure - and the Pekin serves every purpose I want in a duck. Good weight, fast growth, excellent flavor, clean carcass.
