This would be kind of amazing if it happened. I'm sitting on the back deck drinking a coffee and watching the ducks. One of the female Pekin's was low to the ground, puffed up big time and waddling around. All while low to the ground. This went on for maybe 10 minutes, then she returned to her normal, going through a molt look.
Now I know what my chickens look like when they go broody. Miss Penelope my Runner never puffed up a lot. Just started sitting and hissing a lot.

So is this possible...thinking of going broody behaviour in a large duck? Or just a duck being silly? They are silly often

Sorry took too long to see your post. I have a broody Pekin, she started at about 20 weeks (almost 2 weeks now). She's sitting on a clutch (have to candle them, make sure she's not faking me out) and is VERY attentive to her nest, constantly turning the eggs and bringing in fresh hay to reinforce. She will bury the eggs in hay before going out to free range and come right back to it. So, yeah, guess anything is possible. Is she laying? Maybe she's just ummm, horny, or inexperienced or has an urge. Who knows what goes on in the minds of ducks? Good luck trying to figure it out, she will before you...

. Even though she can't get to him. She is laying. Actually they all were going through the end of a molt when she acted this way the 1st time. Now she is laying again.I hope she decides to brood. A friend of mine has rugen eggs. They would go nice with the pekins. True, she will figure it out a few days before I know what is goingon

I have a pekin that is sitting now and has been for about 25 days? Interestingly she is sharing the nest with a muscovie and both sit in the nest together. She only leaves to feed and goes right back to the nest. I candled the eggs and they are good.

Good for you! Had always heard Pekins just don't go broody that often, try telling that to my girl (and yours!). Going to recandle mine later today, some looked pretty good a few days back, some were not. How are you going to handle the hatchlings, will you seperate mom and babies from the rest? Please let us know how the delivery goes, you should be a gramma pretty soon!
