If i wintered 1 female and 1 male pekin would that be a problem? I bought 6 mallards and 3 pekins this spring and they all ended up drakes except the 1 pekin hen. I am going to try and find a few more females, but if I can't will the drake over mate the female. All of the other drakes are going to freezer camp. If anyone has any female ducks for sale near Duluth, MN please let me know.

Thanks
Wes

I would think that would be fine... a duck's sex drive is not as high in winter, so I wouldn't expect a problem. In any event, that's MUCH better than trying to overwinter a solitary duck. I had to do that one time after my entire flock was demolished by a crafty fox (yes, they really are very smart), all except one poor little hen. She was SO unhappy. She didn't eat for a week, and then she would only eat when we were there hand-feeding her. She would hardly ever move except when she saw us, and then she would call and call and pull at our legs to get our attention. Poor little thing. She did eventually get new companions, but that was a long winter.

Good luck!

Another ??? It gets quite cold up here, like -20 sometimes. My duch house is 6x8 abd is insulated with thermal windows. If i put a 100 watt light bulb and a lot of straw will that be warm enough. I have read on this site that ducks handle the cold very well.

Thank you
Wes:)
