Pellets vs crumbles

I think I want to swap the girls over to pellets instead of crumbles. They seem to have invented a game that apparently involves turning over their feeder and dumping out all the food.

I had thought of getting a hanging feeder, but think I'll swap to pellet instead. Do those have to be in a feeder, as well? Or will they pick them up off the ground with no problems?

Mine all liked to dump the feeders too!

I feed layer pellets, and I try to keep them off the ground because damp ground can cause the food to mold. And moldy food can kill them.

Not having anything to hang the feeder from, I tied it off to a wall under shelter.

I have my pellets in a feeder that sits on a drink crate (think milk crate only shorter lol). It works out well. the girls don't kick shavings in it and they don't knock it over..

I am not trying to hijack this post, but can a chicken get problems from eating pellets like a horse could? Can the pellets swell up in their pipe and get stuck somewhere down the throat or digestive system? I have seen serious pellet problems in horses, so better give a different food, but chickens......?

what do you feed them when they are not baby chicks and not laying yet inbetween food

0 to 8 weeks, starter
8 to 20 weeks, grower
20+ weeks, layer

Or a starter/grower combo for 20 weeks.
