Good morning! I had an egg bound hen. I followed the protocol for her being egg bound and she did pass the soft shell egg but I’m pretty sure it broke inside of her as she passed it. She’s been acting all fluffed up an appears swollen down there by her vent. I bought penicillin 100ml last night. I wanted to know the correct Cc dosage for penicillin 100 ml as I could not find the information on this site after I had been looking for hours. How many days also should I be giving the penicillin? Can I give the injectable to her orally? Will it have the same effectiveness? Any and all advice is appreciated!

You have the Penicillin G, with 300,000 units per Ml, correct?

If so, you would give 0.15ml per pound into the breast tissue, once a day, or every two days.

To administer IM, you need some 22 gauge needles. Here is some info on giving birds medicine IM.

Do you have any pictures of the hen, and her vent area? Try to keep her hydrated well with sugar water, or Gatorade, and consider putting a humidifier near her pen to aid in the removal of the broken shell material. If not in too bad condition, you could try soaking her rear in warm Epsom saltwater.

Thank you for your prompt reply and information Isaac. I’m taking notes right now. I do not have a picture of her vent area but I will try to get one today when I open up the coop and catch her to administer the penicillin. I have attached pictures of the needles and penicillin I was able to find yesterday. Are these the correct needles and penicillin you were talking about?

I forgot to mention i am giving the entire flock electrolytes in their water right now. I have 3 water stations and she has been drinking really well and eating. She just looks swollen and red in the vent area and kinda hangs out fluffed up.

How does 15ml convert to CC ?

Yes, you have all the right supplies. The link I provide on the bottom requires an account, which is free, but you'll have access to a video regarding how to give birds medicine IM.

It is 0.15ml, not 15ml. ML and CC are equal to each other, so you'd give her 0.15cc.

Yes, a few pictures or even a video would be a great help to the folks here.

Oh I gotcha! Perfect! I will set up that account now. Yes as soon as the sun comes up I will try to get you a picture and a video. Thank you so much for your time and your help!

Hello again Isaac!

So I was not able to get a picture of her vent. She bit me really hard after I administered her penicillin and I spent 20 minutes trying to catch her and was unsuccessful. I did however get these pictures to try and add onto this. When I opened the coop this morning I did catch her to administer her shot. I put her in a cage while I drew up the fluid and pulled her out when I gave her the shot. ( this is when she bit and got out of my arms ) as you can see, her poop is very watery and white. In the other picture it shows how fluffed up she is. She is also shaking her head ALOT. almost constantly. I treated the whole flock for mites and Worms as a precaution a week ago. So I don’t think it’s mites Or worms why she is shaking her head. It’s got to be something else. Could this be infection? Cocci? Neurological? Thank you in advance!

I’m sorry, here are the pictures

I see she's outside. It may be better if you take her inside, and set her in a calm, quiet area with feed and water provided. To aid in expelling the material you could set her in a bathroom, and turn the shower, not touching her, but to raise the humidity in the room.

Hopefully, she passes the rest of the material soon, due to the slimy-like nature of the material, it's often hard for them to properly expel the material which can result in some lethargic behavior. If she doesn't pass it soon, I may try to lube up my finger, and insert it into her vent and see if I can feel any egg material, and try to gently pull it out.

The head shaking could be due to mites, ear infection, neurological, if she's gasping afterwards it could crop-related, or some sort of blockage. A video would be helpful. What did you use for the mite treatment?

I would check her crop, her abdominal area for swelling, and her whole body for mites if you can. If she is on the older side, and the lethargy doesn't improve, and the yellow-colored urates persists, it possible she has a reproductive disorder.

I will tag @Eggcessive , and @Wyorp Rock , as I hang out more on the duck forums, and am a little more familiar with the protocol we do there. They may suggest something different along the lines of treatment.

Good advice from @Isaac 0 above. In chickens most people would use 0.25 ml of Procaine Penicillin G given into the breast muscle daily for 4-5 days. Do not give it orally. Alternate sides of the breast daily for injections.

Grabbing her off the roost before daylight, or keeping her in a dog crate would be the bes t way to catch her for the injection. The crate would be good to keep track of her droppings, and how much she is eating and drinking. I would keep the crate with her flock. Giving her 1/2 of a Caltrate or calcium with vitamin D3 tablet for several days, would be good to see if it makes her egg shells hard.

Make sure that her crop is emptying overnight by early morning before she has any food or water. Adding a lot of water to a small bowl of chicken feed could get her to take mire water.
