Perches for baby chicks?

Hey,

I have 27, 5 day old chicks and I am wondering if I can put a perch in the brooder? If not when can I put one in there?

My two Jersey Giants are six days old and I read to use a 1/2" dowel for them to perch. I did and they are hoping on and off...on and off.
They love it.
