Lots of options, as long as they are at least about 2" anything will work. I like the 2x4 wide side up but some also roost on the 2x2 edges and right on the flat part of the poop board.

That's a bigass Zen garden!!
But I know what you mean.

I just finished your tractor article. Now I have no planning or designing to do for the one I want to build next year! Thanks for that too.

Yeah, I left out the 'garden' part of the Zen for obvious reasons. But I do love cleaning my coop every day. Weird sense of satisfaction.

Someone here did a trial and found that they liked the 2x4 roost with the wider side up. Mine are set over 2' wide poop boards that are covered in a layer of sand -- easy, and actually zen-like, to sift the poop out!

put the roosts much higher than the boxes. chickens can sleep flat footed or on a “perch.” i think the height matters more than the size of the perch.

i have several sized perches and the 2x4’s get used the most since they are the highest
