Perches?

I know all my chickens will roost as high up as they can, in the old coop they had their roosts at 5 feet. Atm they are in our old oil shed (had a mite problum, and building a new coop in a few weeks and dont want to put them in the old one. PS there is NO oil in the oil shed just FYI) untill the new coop goes up. The 300 gallon oil tanks top sits 6 feet off the ground and they are roosting up on top if it right now. In the new Coop I plan on having the roost be 4ft off the ground.

My flock roosts about 1 foot below the ceiling of the coop. Their roosts are cedar branches I cut and tied into a grid pattern, then suspended it from the ceiling.
The girls have a ladder, also made of cedar branches, that helps them up to the roost. The alpha of the flock have the highest spots and the youngest start out roosting on the ladder and work their way up the pecking order.

They like the highest available spot. I would recommend making all perche sthe same height so there are no pecking order issues for who is on the high percha nd who is on the low one.

That is one reasen I plan on having mine just be 1 maybe 2 long ( going to be a 8x8ft coop) roosts that will stretch from one side of the coop to the other. I know before I had birds that would "fight" over the highest perch in the camper coop. I plan on making sure that they roosts in the new coop are all the same height which Im thinking will be around 4 or 5 feet off the ground.
