Howdy all,
Not new to chickens but new to posting about them online! Came here specifically to seek some answers to an issue with one of our hens but thought I should say hello anyway.
Currently we only have three girls as the foxes and raccoons have been VERY cruel to us- don't worry, we have stepped up our security greatly since our last tragedy, which now includes a personal security guard (as in me or my mom) while out browsing- but otherwise they get along swimmingly and are doing well. They're on the older side for laying- the Australorp, Rita, and the Blue Andalusian, Andy, must be about four or so, and the Golden Laced Wyandotte, Goldie, is two or three, though she in particular is laying pretty well. In the past we've had Speckled Sussex which are still my favorite breed we've ever had, but our whole flock of eight at the time was wiped out by a loose dog.
Nevertheless, we carry on! Next year we'll likely get more Sussex which I am quite excited about- they were so friendly and easy to tame and, dare I say, loving!
Thanks for reading!
