Also the two that hatched yesterday are very active and they're stepping on the other eggs that are trying to hatch. Scratching wood shavings in them and stuff. Should I remove the chicks? Don't have an incubator.
This was a month almost a month ago, but just reporting an update, in case anyone sees and is doing their own research.
The chick stayed exactly like this photo for another 36 hours. I did my research about shrink-wrapped and helped it out. Little chick was kinda weak for the first few days but seemed to be getting stronger - just a lot smaller than the other 4 who had already hatched. It was a happy ending for a little while.
But at about 10 days, I found it dead and flattened. At this point, Mama and chicks were in a small cage whenever they weren't supervised in the yard. Not sure if it died on its own and then got squashed or if it got underfoot and was killed that way. I took them out of the cage after that. :-(
All this to say -- helping a shrink-wrapped baby chick out can work - and to me felt better than just letting it stay stuck.
