Hi Jacob! Are you absolutely sure that you want brown eggs? Cause if you have a 3 year old, I strongly suggest that you get at least 1 EE. Nice bird, and your son will love those blue, aqua, or green eggs! Other breeds to consider: Dominique, Plymouth Barred Rock, Black Australorpe. Check out Henderson's chicken breeds chart. Look for breeds that do well in confinement. And look for breeds that have a rep for being docile. I advise you to stay away from any of the sex linked or production breeds. Also, the Mediterranean breeds have a rep for being flighty, and sometimes do not play well with others.

All I can say is my Bantam Cochins lay a very pretty little brown egg. They make such a wonderful addition to my small backyard. And then think about it... you could have a half dozen or more in the same space and half the feed of 3 big girls.

I know you said, brown eggs. But..but...I have to put a plug in for the leghorn. Not too many people, expect the ones on here that know me, know how I love the white leghorn. Sweet birds. Crazy good foragers! Follow you around like a puppy dog, wanting those treats. All of the leghorns I've had, I call Miss Piggy. Yep. Here is a photo where all of my girls are wanting the treats I have, see who is on my leg? An egg a day, yep, an egg a day.

Also, those sweet sweet friendly Red Sex LInks will give you a brown egg a day. Very talkitive!

Orpingtons. Of course I'm biased, I just started my first flock and Orpingtons are what I chose for all the same reasons you listed. I have 2 Buff and 2 Lavender.

Jacob. By now you've realized that chicken breeds are like Lay's potato chips... "bet you can't eat/have just one". Thus... chicken math. Build that coop to accommodate!

I second the vote for buff orpintons, black astralorpes, and wyandottes. Adding in Cockoo Marans.
I have 2 welsummers and they are super flighty. I would not get any more with my 3yo kid. They just always are spooked when the other 8 are calm and chill. One continuously flies into the hardware cloth on the run (can't ever find the door).
