Hiya

As most of you know(prehaps), my I have 2 silkies, with one who came out to being a roo

So I am going to the feed store at 5 pm pst.
SO I want a bearded silkie. HOW do I ASSURE I am getting a pullet???

Purchase them all? At least you have good odds, then.

Seriously, the only want to ensure you are getting a specific gender of silkie is to purchase adult or nearly adult birds.

He only has ones that are 5 months old
Should I look for combless ones?
I really cant get them all, as space is a slight problem for more than 2. Plus, my dad, who lectures me about my spending issues wont allow it....v

Well, any chance you can take photos and post them for opinions before deciding?

Okay, at 5 months, and probably hatchery quality, you might be able to tell. Comb size may give away gender, but don't count on it. Wattles are always small on bearded silkies, and pretty much medium sized on beardless ones, regardless of gender. Streamers--long feathers coming off hte back of hte crest and hackle are the best way to tell males. There is more of a definitive break at the back of a pullet or hen's crest. Generally at this age males are more likely to be tall and gangly, pullets more typey. Male combs tend to show more red than female combs, although ideally they should be very dark for either gender.
