I'm pretty new to the board but I wanted to share pictures of my new birds. They just came home a couple of weeks ago (a few of you were very helpful in answering the questions I had about transporting them home in my car! Thanks!). They are about 7 weeks old in these pictures. I bought them from a breeder with the intent to start my own small flock.

Two hens and a rooster...the rooster is the lightest of the three (nice thing about the cuckoo marans, you can tell the sex by color, even as tiny chicks! Very convenient).

Roo is the one furthest to the right:

Roo is behind the girls:

I'm in love! They are the coolest chickens ever (no, I'm not biased at all....

Nice Birds! My Roos have a lot of silver, but my hens compared to yours are almost black with very very little white.

Have fun with them! Can't wait to have them lay DARK eggs!

Thanks! Yes, we are very excited to see what they lay. They should be decent...I guess it can be hit-or-miss sometimes with these guys as to just how dark their eggs are, but the breeder we bought them from is very diligent about breeding not only for quality/type but also egg color. The eggs he was hatching were pretty dark...I think he's been getting mostly 6s and 7s with some 8s on the Marans color scale from the hens these guys were hatched from...so I have a good chance of getting some nice eggs.

Because they are a French breed, we went with French names.

Louis is the rooster; Camille and Odette are the girls.

Up until now I've just kept a few hens (random breeds, not Marans) for eggs for us for eating. I've never had any for breeding. I think I'm developing a serious chicken addiction....

Crunchie, you will love your Marans. I raise them too. I have Cuckoos like yours and recently started with Black Coppers (really dark eggs from Pres. of American Marans Club!). They are so friendly, calm, and good layers. Roosters are gentle giants. Hens occasionally go broody and are very good moms. They are a wonderful breed!

I'd like to see pics of your black coppers, too!! I'm just starting small with the trio of cuckoos, but I know I'm going to want black coppers eventually, too. They are really beautiful birds!
