My kids now want pigmy goats.. Is there anything I need to watch out for. I grew up on a farm but never had goats. I know wilted cherry leaves are bad. Anything else. What are some suggestions on pins and fencing for them. If we do get them we will keep them for the warm months then sale for winter.

Just my opinion. If you want to get goats, get them with an eye to keeping them and not as a short term project. Your children will not be happy with you if you get the goats for them, they get attached to them, and then you sell them in the fall. They are not difficult to care for. They need a shelter from the rain and win, they need hay, a salt block, and they should be vaccinated for tetanus and enterotoxemia. . You can get the vaccine, CD/T at most feed stores. You can make a good fence out of livestock panels. I suggest you get a book before you do anything. Go to www.caprinesupply.com and ask for their catalog. They have a selection of books and you ought to be able to find at least one to suit your purposes. The catalog also contains a wealth of good information.

My kids are older and totally understand why we can’t keep them in the winter. To say they are a project they are not. Our animals are like babies they are spoiled. We actually got two kid goats (regular sized ones Saturday. Yes they will be vaccinated this upcoming weekend. I do a lot of research before buying any new animal. I was raised on a farm and I am well aware on the most part of how to care for them

Pigmy goats are pretty hardy I would watch out for azalea Bush it is very poisonous thay are also very good escape artist make sure that when you buy them there pygmy goats and not Nigerian dwarf Nigerian dwarf are milk goats have different needs then pigmy I would recommend getting female goats if you get a male make sure he's castrated also you need to invest in good fencing if you don't you'll get frustrated chasing them around every day and end up selling them sooner than you thought
