Pine straw

Is pine straw (long dried soft pine needles) a good medium to put down in the chicken run?

Thats what I put in mine. the price is right and it doesn't seem to hurt them at all. But its not very absorbent, so I put some shavings in also. I wonder what the general opinion will be?

That's what I've used for a couple of years now. I throw mine through a chipper though to make fines.
